Google sees example.com and www.example.com as two different site’s pages.Setting your preferred domain tells Google which version of your site’s URL (www or non-www) you prefer.
What is a Preferred Domain?
A preferred domain is a domain you have chosen as the one that you prefer to be shown in search results.
Once you set your preferred domain (www or non-www), Google use that information for future crawls and indexing refreshes. For instance, if you set your preferred domain as http://example.com, Google will treat links to http://www.example.com exactly the same as links to your preferred domain.
And If you don’t specify a preferred domain, Google treat the www and non-www versions of your domain as separate references to separate pages. This can cause your site to face duplicate content issues.
Setting Preferred Domain Using Google Webmaster Tools
1) Sign in to Google Webmaster Tools with your Gmail account
2) Go to Webmasters Tool home page, then click the site you want.
3) Click the gear icon , and then click Site Settings.
4) Go to Site Settings
5) Select the Preferred domain, and click on save
